It is vital to view these results through the appropriate scientific lens. The researchers emphasize that these are preliminary findings drawn from a small, observational cohort. Observational studies can identify correlations, but they cannot definitively prove causation. It is entirely possible that individuals who proactively take higher doses of vitamin D also engage in other brain-healthy behaviors, such as exercising regularly or eating a nutrient-dense diet, which could also contribute to their higher test scores.

To confirm these findings, researchers noted that larger randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are necessary. RCTs are the gold standard for determining whether an intervention directly causes an outcome.

Additionally, while 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily is a common dosage in functional and nutritional medicine—especially for correcting established deficiencies—it is well above the standard Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, it can accumulate in the body's tissues. Excessively high levels over long periods can lead to hypercalcemia (a dangerous buildup of calcium in the blood), which can cause nausea, weakness, and kidney complications.
